Styling DNA

The car design become more and more important, it is an innovative product and likewise challenging. Car design is classified between a technology-driven product and user driven product. The style of a car plays a big role in the visual appearance. It exudes aesthetics and considers conceptual design. Furthermore aesthetics describe: judgment, attitude, understanding, emotion and value. It’s common in car design that the visual appealing is the reference and recognition to brand and identity.

Most car industries refer to brand image, identity and vehicle architecture. For example Volvo, Volkswagen, Mercedes, BMW etc. have consistently characters in every production.

Between user-driven product and technology-driven product are important elements such as growth in feelings or emotional areas which can not be neglected. An active element have attitude, emotion and feelings which reflect the brand image and identity of the car. Design is also an element for problem solving, it considers the activity as a problem and should be defined and solved through the design process.

Technology-driven

The technology is an algorithm based on artificial intelligence. It is an technique which considers the brand image and identity which capture the key elements of the brand. From those parameters t the contour feature line can be calculated mathematically.

User-driven

User-driven is the manual approach where designers design a car. Designers reflects to natural resources as a source of inspiration.  Designers decide what the exterior and interior of the car will look like, how it will make the customer feel. Design language will be considered thorough out the design process as well, it’s responsible for concept cars and shaping the future image of the brand.

Design for the connected age

BMW’s chief designer predicts that tomorrow’s cars will be controlled by voice commands, gestures, and touch screens.

Earlier in the car design industry was all about chrome, cup holders and plastics but today the technology is striven towards new communication models such as flat-panel displays, and incredible animation in car interiors. The designers job is to imagine himself in the future as well as to think about what the consumers will want in the future. A good design will sell cars easily as well as great technology. The user interface is becoming more important. Users will expect the same seamlessness in the car like in the electronic business.  Today BMW has big screen in the middle as well as sthey offer head-up displays.

What will dashboard displays look like in 10 years?

It could be flexible displays. The idea is to integrate the display into the shape of the dashboard. They will be no difference between a button, screen and the decor. The dashboard should become less of a block and it should look lighter. They will be no area of hard-key buttons anymore. In the area of computers or on TV’s the controls have changed. The user operate via voice control or gesture.
